This is my first new idea for working on critical thinking skills and to promote The Big 6.
I have been working with fifth grade students on the first 2 steps of The Big 6. I divided the class into groups and gave each group a higher-order question. The group needed to fill in an organizer about what background information or scaffolding questions they would have to answer in order to answer the big question (see link to the "Questions" folder, below). They also needed to identify keywords they could use for searching in indexes, the catalog, encyclopedia, dictionaries, etc.
Next the groups needed to list and prioritize the information sources that they judged would be most effective in helping them find the information they would need.
